Why do emperor penguins lay eggs in the Antarctic winter?

Emperor penguins are the only penguins that choose to breed during the Antarctic winter! We know environment which has extremely low climates is very harsh for livings. Especially in winter! Low temperatures such as -20~40°C may appear at any time. Not to mention extreme temperatures such as -60°C in the event of a blizzard. Why do emperor penguins lay eggs in the Antarctic winter? It turns out that male penguins have a trick to deal with severe cold!

When Antarctica is about to enter winter, a thick layer of ice will form on the sea. Emperor penguins choose to raise their offspring on the ice mainly for safety reasons. On the thick ice, the emperor penguins began to gather and look for their favorite objects. Like humans, not every emperor penguin can find an object. Emperor penguins whose courtship failed can only return to the seaside to forage, and the ice layer no longer belongs to them.

It takes weeks for penguin parents to conceive their babies. During this period, they will actually make a snowball by themselves and use it as a penguin egg to practice egg hatching skills! After a few weeks, when the real penguin eggs are laid, the mother penguin can incubate the eggs with ease.

They use their feet to separate the eggs from the ice, and then use their body temperature to provide heat to the eggs. In about a month or so, the penguin eggs will be handed over to the penguin dad. Because the mother penguin urgently needs to eat to replenish her body at this time. At this time, it is the most difficult test period for the emperor penguins.
